Conversations Magazine Feature: Alison Thompson

by Cyrus Webb

When trouble comes will you find the courage to run towards it instead of away from it?

I found myself asking that very question when in 2011 I had the pleasure of interviewing Alison Thompson. She was promoting her book THE THIRD WAVE, and I must say that it was one of the most powerful and poignant reads of the year for me.

Here was this woman who made a decision in the face of other's hardship to give up her way of life and go where she could make a difference. Whether it was spending months volunteering at Ground Zero after 9/11 or making the decision to travel around the world to help those affected by the massive tsunami that affected south Asia.

Alison is not just about talking. She puts her time and resources where her mouth is. She is yet another example of what one person can do, and how you can use what you have to bring about real change in the world.

ABOUT THE THIRD WAVE
The Third Wave tells the inspiring story of how volunteering changed Thompson’s life. It begins with her first real introduction to disaster relief after 9/11 and ends with her more recent efforts in Haiti, where she has helped create and run, with Sean Penn, an internally-displaced-person camp and field hospital for more than 65,000 Haitians who lost their homes in the 2010 earthquake. In The Third Wave, Thompson provides an invaluable inside glimpse into what really happens on the ground after a disaster—and a road map for what anyone can do to help. As Alison Thompson shows, with some resilience, a healthy sense of humor, and the desire to make a difference, we all have what it takes to change the world for the better.

Conversations Feature: Leila Wahbeh

"If you want to do anything, you have to start with one step. If you learn to count one, two, you will reach 1 million... If I help a hundred children now, there will be a hundred families later who'll be educated and well brought up and who will help others because they were helped. In the long run, there will be thousands." ~ Leila Wahbeh

by Patricia Martin Holt

When I married a retired hydrologist, I had no idea how our travels to the Middle East would change my perspective. Initially interested in the fine crafts of the area, I was led to Leila Wahbeh. The day I met her was the day my life changed forever.

Her story unfolds with her family’s flight from Jerusalem to Egypt in 1947 to avoid the terrors of the war with Israel, and their return four years later to find they had lost everything. Despite suffering terrible hardships and deprivations, Leila finishes school and marries a doctor. All goes well until the 1967 War. Her husband, because he renders aid to war victims, is deported, leaving Leila and their four children in Jerusalem as pawns for his good behavior and hers. Despite the probability of her own imprisonment, with circumstances weighed against her, she continues her crusade for the poor.

Leila moves mountains of red tape in her efforts to transform the helpless into the helpful. In Committee of One, you’ll meet, as I did during our stays, some of the people whose dignity and pride she has single-handedly restored: Um Rafila, born in a cave as her mother fled her village in 1948; Um X who can’t read or write but whose ten children will graduate from college; Um Ghassan, whose piecework provides the medical care needed by her dying pre-school daughter; and Mustafa, a young engineer, who is jailed for preventing renewed garbage dumping at the first cleared site for Leila’s new sanitation center in Baqa’a Camp.

With unflagging energy and donations of money and materials, Leila helps her people to become self-sufficient. One family survives, then 100. As those 100 educated families reach out to hundreds more, thousands of families cross the bridges built by a Committee of One.

Find out more about Leila Wahbeh in Patricia Martin Holt's book COMMITTEE OF ONE at www.patriciamartinholt.com.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Oprah

by Cyrus Webb

"The fact that you're here matters. Because you are here...because you made it, you are worthy." ~ Oprah

We have all heard the popular line from the hit movie Field of Dreams: "If you build it they will come." When I think of those words I think that it means when you do the work, the reward follows. Few people can attest to that fact like Oprah Winfrey who turned 60 on January 29th of this year.

For 25 years the world benefited from the talent and tenacity of the Queen of Daytime Talk, Oprah Winfrey. She has managed to acquire adoring fans from every corner of the globe and in the process made us feel as though on some level she could identify with us. Isn’t that after all the source of her power? The ability to be all things to all people? I would say so, and whether you have followed her over the years or just recently joined the Oprah bandwagon, there is no doubt that she has changed the way most of us look at life.

For me Oprah represented the very essence of what is considered the American Dream. She came from extremely humble beginnings in my home state of Mississippi to achieve a level of wealth, prestige and power that few can truly comprehend. Over the past couple of decades we have witnessed her tackle her own personal demons while helping us battle our own. Year after year her loyal supporters united in with their time and their hearts, and she gave of herself freely and willingly with each and every show.

Due to listening to her heart, Oprah announced that her 25th season of her talk show would be her last. In January 2011 a new chapter of her life began: that being the birth of the Oprah Winfrey Network or OWN. Here was a channel devoted entirely to content approved by Oprah herself and it featured a mix of docu-dramas, reality shows, movies and of course talk shows. Since its launch it has gone through some changes, however, the premise of the network has remained the same: to help individuals realize their fullest potential.

As someone who was excited about the new endeavor I have found my favorite programs that speak to me and my own interests. In the beginning it was Season 25: Oprah Behind The Scenes, Our America hosted by Lisa Ling, the reality show Your OWN Show and Master Class. Currently Oprah's Super Soul Sunday, Master Class, Oprah's Next Chapter and Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots are my top picks. Regardless of whether I can relate or enjoy everything on the channel, there is also a certain excitement in knowing that no matter what day you might tune in you are getting a glimpse into the wide-ranging demographics that Oprah has managed to speak to and inspire over the years.

In 2013 Oprah returned to the world of movies, starring alongside Forrest Whitaker in the powerful film THE BUTLER, once again receiving award nominations and praise for her role. So what is next for the woman that seemingly has everything? It’s hard to say, but regardless of what she chooses to do next, you can believe that the world will continue to watch, take notes and talk about how the little girl from Mississippi was able to conquer the world. In an open letter to the world in O Magazine she says her greatest achievement is this: "Never shutting my heart down." May we all be so fortunate in our lives.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Shonda Rhimes

"I'm most proud of the fact that I have figured out how to exist as both a creative person and artist, and a businesswoman and a manager because those two things do not go together." ~ Shonda Rhimes

by Cyrus Webb

With three hit shows (Gray's Anatomy, Private Practive and Scandal) on one major network (ABC) Shonda Rhimes is showing the world why she is one of Holllywood’s most powerful women today.

Through her production company Shondaland has fulfilled a desire that she had: to rule the world through television. Millions have been caught in the spell of her story-lines, and with Season 3 of her blockbuster hit Scandal breaking television records and earning awards, we can understand why she is able to smile.

Think of her personal story: a single mother who was writing at home to now being recognized by Oprah as a force to be reckoned with in the world. "If I can continue doing this work and loving it, and still find time to be a mother,"says Shonda, "I'm living my dream." She has taken her love of story-telling and turned it into a living that others are able to look to as a model of what's possible.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Why We Go Goo Goo For Lady Gaga

by Cyrus Webb*

At a time when so many in the entertainment industry are scrambling to keep up with the trends of the day, superstar Lady Gaga is standing out from the pack. Her style grabs headlines, but it is the music she creates taht keeps people talking about her.

For the past few years I have found myself caught in Lady Gaga's spell as well. The first song that I couldn't seem to get out of my head was "Paparazzi." Then there were songs like "Bad Romance", "Poker Face", "Telephone",  "Born This Way" and "Applause" that kept me going back to Amazon.com time and again.

I'm not the only one of course that can't get enough of the entertainer that seems to be everyone and doing everything. Her peers in the business have also been in awe of her talent and her rise from seemingly nowhere to the top of the charts and in the sights of everyone including former President Bill Clinton.

What is it that has drawn people to her? "Lady Gaga is so appealing and so successful because she is so unique," says Bonny Dolan, Managing Director and Executive Producer at Comma Music. "Who wears meat? She is fearless with an extraordinary talent. Mix this with her great voice and the fact she writes her own music, makes her the
full package. She isn't afraid to do anything and has done amazing job
using social media to share her music and spread her message. Most
importantly, she makes people feel comfortable no matter who or what they
are: gay, straight, black, white, etc. She helps people build confidence
in themselves. She is truly 'performance art' with an amazing voice."

Bonny seems to also believe that the rise of Lady Gaga also has to do with where music was when she came on the scene. "I think people were ready for this unique person to cut through the clutter and demand our attention. Demographically, she appeals to so many different audiences, teens and tweens, young adults, baby boomers and even the mature market."

Walt Ribeiro, composer and creator of For Orchestra is someone else who admires the skills of the Gaga. Ribeiro fuses his love of the orchestra and pop music and arranges music by artists such as Lady Gaga. He told me in a phone interview that he "loved Lady Gaga's music from the beginning," even before many of us even know who she was and definitely before knowing what she would become. "I was blown away from her music and loved her production style," he says.

As someone who has a love for music himself, he seconds what Bonny had to say about Gaga's appeal. "Every artist is an inspiration to every other artist," says Ribeiro. "She grabs your attention but has the content to keep your attention."

Something else that is clear with Lady Gaga is that she has found her place in the world and is comfortable in her own skin. I think whether you are a public figure or not, that is something that everyone strives for. She is fearless yet aware that her influence and gift were given to her for a purpose.

Whether through her foundation or work to bring attention to causes that matter to her, Lady Gaga is not afraid of taking a chance. We should all be so fortunate as to be able to use our gifts in such a way that the world can't help but take notice.

Conversations Feature: Grammy Award-winner Dionne Warwick

by Cyrus Webb

She is the Grammy-winning legend that has impacted the world through music for over half a century. Ms Dionne Warwick is a legend not just because of her voice but because of the life she has lived and continue to live. She is a perfect example of someone understanding the importance of the moment and living NOW. In fact, to celebrate her 50th anniversary in making memorable music she released a celebratory album called NOW (which was nominated for a Grammy this year) that is not only pleasing her loyal fans but making new ones as well.

I have had the privilege of interviewing Ms. Warwick three times on Conversations LIVE, and each time she was nothing but gracious and appreciative. During the first conversation I was joined by Susan Violante from Venezuela , an author who told Ms. Warwick that her music helped her to learn English! What an amazing opportunity: to be able to impact someone's life in such a dramatic way.

As I spoke with Ms. Warwick for this interview she shared some with me what this 50 journey has been like for her. ""It's been a wonderful ride," she says. "I'm thankful to my supporters for 50 years. I basically thought that if I stayed true to who I am and sung the kind of songs that my audience expected of me then longevity was a given."

I asked her if she believed that what people responded to with her was the soul and the love that she puts into her music. "I think it's definitely that," she replied. "The music that I've been able to sing has grown. That is the beauty of music. It has the ability to live on and on."

Though she was confident in her gift and believed it could take her anywhere, even Ms. Warwick says she never believed she would be in the business this long. "I felt that my first 10 years would be it and I would go on to teaching," she told me. "But that 10 years turned into 10 more and on and on. Now here we are."

Because she is still here, she does understand the influence that music has in our lives. "Music generally has an amazing impact on people," she says. "I could never imagine a world without music. Artists are known as the messengers. I hope the messages that I have been sending have been effective and will continue to be."

Talking about the younger generations that are discovering her music, Ms. Warwick's says this: "I certainly hope they discover some really wonderful songs that were written before they were born. I want them to enjoy the messages I have been able to bring. " Thanks to the internet, that is exactly what is happening already, and this thrills her. "It's wonderful to hear all of the comments," she says. "I am humbled by so many young people listening to my music and enjoying it. I am glad they could jump on that train and take the ride with me."

Music is not the only way people of all generations are learning about Ms. Warwick. She is still active in her charitable work and her other businesses which include writing and even a fragrance. "As a youngster my grandfather told me that we are all on this earth to be of service to each other," she told me when I asked about the work she is doing to help others. "If my talent is the way I can do that then it's very easy to do." She then added: "I think that it's a part of what we are here to do. The messages that we send are vitally important."

Though we are only months into 2014 Ms. Warwick has already enjoyed many memorable moments. First was the Grammy nomination. Then there was the collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus on the single "Hope Is Just Ahead. Add tour dates, media appearances  and a new album to her schedule and you can see she continues to set an example as to what is possible for all of us.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Author Glenda L. Hunter

by Cyrus Webb

It was through a mutual friend that I met Glenda Hunter in late 2011, and we have been friends ever since.

Glenda, a resident of Clinton, Mississippi,  is one of those individuals who has been able to use her life to not only help other people but show what it means to celebrate the gift that life is. This, however, has not been an easy road for her. At a young age she had her innocence taken away from the very man who should have been there to protect her: her father. As a result of the abuse she suffered, Glenda developed alters or multiple personalities that would become a part of her life not just through childhood but adulthood as well. With courage and conviction she has shared her story in two books: AN UNSPEAKABLE SECRET and MOMMY TWINKLE EYES. Her goal? To let others know what is possible for them, regardless of their circumstances.

It has been my pleasure to see the amazing results of Glenda sharing her story with the world. I was privileged enough to be her first radio interview and to host her first book-signing. When I was thinking about  those who I had met that celebrated the gift of life and would be great examples for all of us I knew that she would have to be apart of this issue.

In describing how the abuse began, Glenda says this in her book AN UNSPEAKABLE SECRET: "Fear was always gripping my body because I was never sure what was going to happen. When he became mad, he was like a monster out of control... Dad was quick to tell me how bad I was. No longer was I his special girl.. Somehow I had become an awful person who couldn't do anything right. I wasn't sure what had changed to make me this kind of a person."

That can be painful to read, let alone believe of yourself. Glenda explained how she has been able to now break her silence and share her story. "I felt like other people probably struggled with the same thing that I had struggled with," she told me. "I had looked for books to help me get better and that's why I wrote mine so I could get my story out there and help others."

A large part of the healing she has experienced today has come from seeking help. Glenda told me that she didn't begin to really understand that she wasn't alone in what she had experienced and felt until therapy. "It was then that I realized a number of people have suffered from that (meaning abuse)." Coupled with dealing with the abuse, however, was the Multiple Personality Disorder. Not finding anyone who was talking about it the way she had experienced gave Glenda courage to move forward with sharing her own experiences. "I found the courage because I wanted someone to write a book from their point of view to say this is what it's like to be multiple. I'm putting it out there for people to say here's the story, and I hope it will be beneficial to you."

That is exactly what it is doing. "It has helped people to open up to me," Glenda shares. "Some have never shared with anyone before. The fact is that (the abuse) affects them in their lives many years after." The communication about it is helping others to understand what the person has gone through and is going through.

Faith is such an important factor to Glenda Hunter's survival as well. When you are abused and mistreated it is easy to feel as though you don't matter. She experienced those very feelings about herself.

That is not the person she is today.

"Getting through the therapy and working through the issues has helped," she says. "When you are degraded in numerous ways you carry that with you until you can work through that to say 'I am worth something'." She has also come to a revelation about herself and all of us. "God has made us all very special," she says. "He has made us all unique. We all have a place and a purpose. I want other to know that they have worth outside of what has happened to them."

Glenda's third book WHO ME? WORTHWHILE? YES, YOU! shares how we can begin to look at ourselves and our circumstances differently. She admits it's not easy and might take time, but it is definitely possible and worth it. "You might ask 'How can God love me with all of this in my background?' The wonderful thing is that He does. He loves you as equally as He does anyone else."

In sharing a part of herself, Glenda Hunter is giving us all something to reflect on when we look at our lives. What does she want everyone who has suffered in silence with the abuse to know? "I want them to know they are worthwhile," she says. "Even though you have had to hold that secret in or been a victim you don't have to stay a victim. You can be a victor. I want them to look within themselves and say I do love who I am. I am important."

Glenda's three adult books AN UNSPEAKABLE SECRET, MOMMY TWINKLE EYES and WHO ME? WORTHWHILE? YES, YOU! as well as her new children's book IT FINALLY HAPPENED are all available on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble online. You can stay in contact with Glenda on Facebook under "Glenda L. Hunter". Her website is www.authorglendalhunter.com.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Author Iris Bolling

by Cyrus Webb

I first became aware of award-winning author Iris Bolling in 2013. She was on Conversations LIVE discussing her book The Pendleton Rule, and it was during that visit that she discussed The Heart series with me.

Fast forward to 2014 and now the books that make up the Heart Series are the basis for the television series The Heart that premiered on the CW in Richmond, VA in Feb. of this year.

Serving as the Creator and Executive Director of the television show, Iris Bolling has assembled a team that has not only helped bring her beloved books to life but are just as invested in its success. Each week the entire cast and those supporting the project have been using social media to spread the word---and the campaign has already begun to bring The Heart to a larger audience.

There are so many things we can learn from what Iris has built through her company. The main for me is the importance of believing in yourself and never letting go of your goals and dreams.

By simply combining her love of romance and politics she has created a world that readers and now viewers can enjoy and appreciate. What a great reminder for all of us who have a vision. What is meant for you is for you.

Keep up with Iris and her upcoming projects at www.irisbolling.net. You can hear my interview with Iris and members of The Heart television series at www.tinyurl.com/theheartcastinterview.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Cherylann Gengel

by Cyrus Webb

Britney Gengel was a 19 year old that was full of life and loved to help. She traveled to Haiti in January 2010 to work for an aide group. Excited about the opportunities that she saw there, she sent the following text to her mother Cherylann Gengel: "They love us so much and everyone is so happy. They love what they have and they work so hard to get nowhere, yet they are all so appreciative. I want to move here and start an orphanage myself."

Hours later Britney Gengel and 300k others would lose their lives in a devastating earthquake.

Even though they were dealing with their grief her parents Len and Cherylann Gengel along with sons Bernie and Richie made the commitment to keep alive Britney's dream by building an orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti. Thanks to the help of individuals around the globe this is now a reality. "I always believed that people were good," Cherylann told me during our discussion on Conversations LIVE. "Through this horrific tragedy it's been validated."

In the book Heartache and Hope in Haiti the Gengel's share their journey to build the Be Like Brit Orphanage which is now home to over 30 children. Shaped in the letter B this is a place that is not only serving a special need in Haiti but serving as an example to the world as to what is possible for us all.

What the Gengels have been able to do is find meaning and purpose in tragedy and show us through fulfilling Britney's dream that all of us have the ability through faith and action to change the destiny of thousands.

See how you can join the great work of the Be Like Brit Orphanage at www.belikebrit.org. Listen to my interview with the Gengels on Conversations LIVE at www.tinyurl.com/lenandcherylanngengelinterview.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Iyanla Vanzant

“When you stand and share your story in an empowering way, your story will heal you and your story will heal somebody else.” ~ Iyanla Vanzant

by Cyrus Webb

I knew that Iyanla Vanzant had a way of reaching your heart and your mind when I first read the book ONE DAY MY SOUL JUST OPENED UP. I had heard about her before the book, but I definitely became a fan of her work at that point.

Since then my favorite book has been the captivating PEACE FROM BROKEN PIECES, which chronicles not just her highs and lows but the lessons she has learned along the way. At the time that we were going to print with this special issue of Conversations Magazine I had just begun to read her newest offering FORGIVENESS (21 Days to Forgive Everyone For Everything).

Whether you have read her books, watched her speak or enjoyed her show Iyanla Fix My Life on the Oprah Winfrey Network, you know that she definitely lives her life by following her heart and her calling. That is the lesson that she gives to each of us. It is an inside job. “So many of us invest a fortune making ourselves look good to the world," she says, "yet inside we are falling apart. It's time to invest on the inside.”

When we make that investment on the inside that is when things really come together and make sense. This also will affect not just what we see in ourselves but what we allow to remain in our circle. Iyanla explains it this way: "One way to eliminate self-negating thoughts and behavior is by gaining more understanding through realizing that you cannot force others to see that what you feel is real.”

Focusing on the real will keep up walking in our own truth. It will help us stay on the path that is meant for us. It will ensure that the success meant for us will be ours.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Wahida Clark

by Cyrus Webb

I first interviewed bestselling author and savvy businesswoman Wahida Clark on December 10, 2007. At that time Conversations Book Club was holding meetings at Waldenbooks in Jackson, MS and we welcomed the public out to our conference calls with authors each week. During that conversation which took place right after her release from prison it was fascinating how even though she was an author with fans around the world she didn't seem to grasp the magnitude of what she was creating.

Clark began writing her first novel while serving a decade-long prison sentence. She told me in that first interview that she had to do something to support her family, and reading an article in a popular magazine gave her the idea to try writing. That proved to be a wise decision. While behind bars, Clark inked a publishing deal with a major publishing house, wrote and released 7 novels garnering devoted fans that continue with her even today.

Now a New York Times bestselling author and CEO of Wahida Clark Presents Publishing, Wahida Clark is proving that she is a force to be reckoned with.

I have had the honor of hosting Ms. Clark in book events in my home state of Mississippi twice now, and each time was like catching up with an old friend.

This year Conversations LIVE made history again by bringing together Wahida and Jackie Collins in their first joint interview---drawing record numbers for the radio show and excitement across the internet.

With everything that she has been through in the last decade, Wahida related to me in her first interview that she can’t even look at her jail time as a bad thing. “I can’t say it was a negative," she told me. "Without it there is no way I would not written a book.”

Definitely an example of what is possible regardless of your past, Wahida Clark shines bright as a gifted storyteller. Her advice to other aspiring writers out there? "I would tell them to write. I have had people tell me that they have five books in their head. What I tell them is they need to put them down on paper, because they aren’t doing you or anyone else any good
while they are just in your head. Do your research and make sure it is the best it can be.”

Currently Wahida is gearing up for the release of book four in her popular "Payback" series called BLOOD, SWEAT & PAYBACK. Stay in contact with her at www.wclarkpublishing.com. Listen to my interview with Clark and Jackie Collins at www.tinyurl.com/jackiewahidainterview.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Author Susyn Reeve

by Cyrus Webb

So much of the world tells us what we can't do and what we won't be, but that doesn't mean that has to be the case. In her book THE INSPIRED LIFE author Susyn Reeve reminds us that our lives is just that: ours to live and to make the most of.

Throughout the book the author gives not only instances from her own life and journey but those of others as well who have learned what it means to live the life intended for them, and how all of us can do the same. There are also amazing quotes sprinkled throughout that give us motivation to get started today to make the changes we want to see in ourselves and the world. "If you want to get from point A to point B," one of the quotes says, "you can not avoid starting where you are." The message of that quote allows us to see that some things can't be avoided, especially if we hope to move forward. To help the reader, there are spaces in the book to identify the areas that are a "work in progress" for you, and identify what it will take in order to get where we want to go.

Part of the process is answer these questions: "What is my vision of an inspired life?" What is it we want that we don't have?" Only by answering these questions can be get to the heart of what it will take to make it happen. This means action. We have to move forward and then work in line with our vision to make it a reality.

The great thing that THE INSPIRED LIFE reminds us of is that we are not on this journey by ourselves. There are others out there who want us to be the best we can be and are willing to give us the encouragement it takes to get there.

THE INSPIRED LIFE gives you the catalyst to realize that the alternative of being inspired is really not what we want. There's nothing worse than being confined to a life that has no purpose. No one should be happy with that. Let's all move forward on the journey to the life intended for us, realizing that there is nothing better than bringing your best to each and every day.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Bestselling author Jackie Collins

by Cyrus Webb

She is one of the most beloved and talked about authors over the past 20 years, and there is no sign of her slowing down any time soon. With over 500 million copies of her books sold to date, Jackie Collins has become synonymous with engaging stories, sizzling story lines and characters that are talked about long after readers finish her books.

I discovered her myself while in High School, and for the past 2 decades I have been one of those eager fans that have devoured everything she has published. Her new book, Confessions of a Wild Child, was published in February 2014 and instantly joined her others in becoming a runaway bestseller. Ever gracious and open about her literary journey, during our conversation Jackie Collins shared not just her own experiences but gave some great advice for those who are looking for the key to living life with purpose and passion.

JACKIE ON HER FANS:
"I have the greatest fans, the greatest readers. I'm on Twitter (@JackieJCollins), and they talk with me about the characters and the books they love. It has been great interacting with them.
JACKIE ON THE KEY TO HER SUCCESS:
"I think I write for everybody. All ages, all colors, all sexual orientations. There's something for everyone in all of my books. I am a true storyteller. That was the gift I was given, to tell stories. My main thrust has always been to write strong women, strong positive women. I think my readers love the women I create. Success (for me) is hearing back from the fans, hearing back from people who love my characters."

JACKIE ON THE REALIZATION (AND FULFILLMENT) OF THE GIFT:
"I think I realized it when I was a kid. I started writing in school and selling my stories to my school mates. I knew then I had a gift of making up a story. I read so much then, spent my leisure time reading books."

"I was expelled from school at 15. At that point you're kind of in limbo, wondering what you're going to do with your life. I wanted to be a writer. My parents said you can't be a writer, you need to go to college. You need to get degrees. When someone says to me you can't do something that's when I say to myself 'Oh yes I can.' I decided to follow the dream, and the dream was to write books. Turns out, people don’t buy books because you went to college. I'm really proud of what I've accomplished."

JACKIE ON PUBLISHING:
Her decision to "self-publish" some of her most popular books as kindle reads made news around the world, birthing over 120,000 stories about the decision. When asked about it, this is what Jackie shared about the move and the response from her fans. "All my books are on e-books in other countries, but a lot were not in America. I decided to do it myself, starting with Bitch, The Love Killers and Chances (Since then both Lucky and Lady Boss have been added to the list). I have gotten amazing reactions from my fans. They love it, and for me the experience has been very freeing."

I shared with Jackie that though I know people like the immediacy of e-books, I still love the physical copies. She mirrored my sentiment. "I want to have a book in my hand," she told me. "I have a Kindle and iPad, but I don't like reading that way. It is the new thing. I think real book lovers will still buy books, but some like the convenience of having them on Kindle which is why I am making them available to them."

JACKIE ON PURSUING THE DREAM:
"I have a particular message for women. Whether it's making cupcakes, writing books, singing or writing songs, you have got to have something for yourself, something that's yours. Everybody's got to have a passion in life. that's what makes life so exciting."

Jackie Collins will forever remain one of those authors whose work withstands the test of time. Why? Because everything she writes comes from the heart.

Stay in touch with Jackie and her upcoming projects on her website www.jackiecollins.com. She also has a Facebook fan page and can be found on Twitter at www.twitter.com/jackiejcollins. Confessions of a Wild Child is available at bookstores and online retailers everywhere.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Dafna Michaelson Jenet

It's been 5 years now since Dafna Michaelson Jenet gained worldwide attention for her decision to visit all 50 states talking with ordinary individuals who were making a difference. The Denver, Colorado resident wanted to shine a light on the good that was taking place all around us that doesn't always rise to the level of media attention as the negative stories we hear so much about. The project was called the 50 In 52 Journey.

In the process of interviewing hundreds of individuals from all walks of life and sharing their stories with the world through blog postings, pictures and videos, Michaelson united a group of people that shared a common thread of wanting to bring out the best in those around them. This was no small feat for a mother of two who was able to accomplish this journey with close friends helping out with the planning and the assistance of social media and other helpful sites on the internet. The result has been not only a spotlight on what one person can do to bring about change. It has also shown how much more we have that unites us than separates us.

Having personally had the opportunity in late 2009 to meet Dafna in Pearl, Mississippi and be interviewed for the project, I was able to see firsthand the passion she had for what she was doing. It was obvious she didn't create 50 In 52 Journey for the fame. I believe if she had, there is no way it would have been as successful. I have no doubt that what she was able to do in one year was just Dafna being Dafna: a woman who believes that the good of the world is worth sharing, no matter where it might be or where it might lead us.

After all 50 states were covered by the end of 2009, the next phase of the "journey" was already taking shape and being announced. Dafna formed the Journey Institute to bring together thought leaders from across the country to address the problems she had seen while on the road. This was a larger effort to unite people who were tackling various issues and allow them to find solutions together. The family of problem-solvers was growing once again.

In explaining its existance, the Journey Institute's websites explains that "the 50 in 52 Journey project sought to bring awareness of people across America who have taken an idea to solve a problem or build community and turned it into reality. The Journey Institute will now seek to help those who have an idea for solving a community problem or in some way building community, but have no idea how to take the idea off the couch and into the community." Once again Dafna was urging the country to act.

Yet it wasn't just her efforts through the institute that she was contending with in 2010. As the year went on, the world learned that Dafna the woman was going on a journey of a different kind in her personal life. With the threat of cancer in front of her, she made the decision to undergo a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. "With two lumps just waiting to turn into cancer I had to act," Michaelson said regarding the discovery. "I could not afford to wait for the ominous day that my oncologist would declare me in active cancer."

As she had done before, Dafna allowed her friends and supporters to take this more intimate journey along with her through her blog postings and articles on Examiner.com. In one entry before the procedure she shared this: "I have written before about the discovery and the testing but have found it incredibly difficult to talk about, let alone write about, what is next for me. On the surface my results from testing were very good. After all, I don’t have cancer...yet. Yet. It is that very 'yet' that has left me in this limbo, this place of gamble... My oncologist, a phrase that still catches in my throat when I say it aloud, told me that I was looking at when I get cancer, not if."

After weighing the options before her and making her decision, Dafna Michaelson Jenet rallied us by the way she attacks life and the problems we all face. She did so again after dealing with a miscarriage and making the decision to share it with the world. What I have learned from her over the years since we met is the increasing power of One that she has harnessed. When one stands up for what they believe is the right thing to do, others will know that they are not alone, no matter what the challenge before them and choose to act as well.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Sheila K. Collins

by Cyrus Webb

Talk about a real gift I was given in my conversation with Sheila K. Collins after reading her book WARRIOR MOTHER!

We have all watched or read about the effects of war on a country. In any struggle there is going to be casualties, collateral damage and the after-effects that can haunt you long after you're in safe territory. For Sheila K. Collins, however, the battles she fought were not on some foreign soil. In WARRIOR MOTHER she allows us to see how the home front can be just as treacherous as any other battlefield.

The book takes you not just into her experiencing the loss of two of her children, but the courage she had to have not just for them but herself as well. We never really know what we can endure until we are put in a situation where all that we know is turned upside down and tested in ways we couldn't have imagined. After dealing with the loss of one of her sons and then the cancer diagnosis of her daughter, Sheila knew she had to remain strong and focused on the moment. That is the lesson I think that sticks with me the most.

She writes this: "Like a prospector panning for gold, with the help of my journal, I have panned and sifted through these experiences: of life, death, and the places in between. I have shaken the sieve in such a way as to uncover the valuable shiny nuggets in these stories, amongst the dirt, pebbles, and other debris.
This sifting and sorting has been, like the experiences themselves, tough at times, but also enlightening.

"Ultimately, I've come to appreciate the many ways that people confront illness, diagnoses and treatment decisions, and yes, even death; the many faces and masks of grief, as well as the precious gifts that come in dreadful-looking packages."

Sometimes we are so involved in life that we forget to enjoy what is. If we can take in all that is going on right now, it will provide us a treasure chest of memories to hold on to and channel when we are feeling lost. Learning how to surrender, Sheila K. Collins gives the reader hope for facing their own war zones in life, allowing them to see that even in loss hope can be found.

The book WARRIOR MOTHER is also a great help to those who find themselves left behind by loved ones. Though grieving is necessary and normal, we have to find the courage to move forward for our loved ones. "I know my grieving process has been strongly affected by remembering how hard both my children fought to stay alive, and all that they were willing to do to gain more life,"Sheila says. "I have never wanted to dishonor them by wasting one moment of whatever precious life I am given."

Conversations Magazine Feature: Martha Stewart

by Cyrus Webb

This might come as a surprise to some, but of all the women on the list this year Martha Stewart is someone I have to give the most credit to.

Many might now realize this but it was her book THE MARTHA RULES which she released in 2005 that was the basis for what is now Conversations Media Group. I had begun hosting the radio show Conversations LIVE and the television show Conversations with C. A. Webb 2 years earlier, and knew that there had to be a way to diversify the messages and guests I was sharing on the air. Because of Martha's book and example I brainstormed on what could be the next step. The next year (2006) I launched both Conversations Magazine and Conversations Book Club, creating a network where I could share my desire to feed your love of life.

I am not the only one who has benefited from the sheer genius and tenacity of Martha Stewart. Through her brand she has been a trendsetter that others have modeled themselves after over the years. She was the one who in 1990 took the risk of deciding to launch a magazine with her face on every issue. Because of the success of that risk, others have followed suit. She is the one who also took her love of catering and turned it into a billion dollar empire that has spawned television  and radio shows and specials, deals with K-Mart, Macys and Wal-Mart and a user-friendly website that brings it all together.

Though she has not appeared on Conversations LIVE (yet, at least), I had the chance to thank her on her own radio program in 2009. I was a part of her "Ask Martha" segment, and before asking her about ideas for my reading parties that I was launching across the country I told her how she has inspired me and the work that I do.

Say what you will about Ms. Stewart, she is living proof that you can succeed, thrive and weather any storm if you are willing to hunker down and now give up. People are going to doubt you and even berate you, but what is important is  your dedicated to your gift and the work you are doing. As a teenager Martha's dad told her this: "You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Anything!"

In her book The Martha Rules she shares how those words from her father propels her: "To this day I can still hear those wise words. You can come up with a Big Idea for something that millions of people need and want. You can become a self-made billionaire. You can refuse to cave in to detractors and manipulators despite enormous pressure...You can emerge intact even through the toughest of times. You can do anything!" (p.162) And the same is true for each and every one of us if we believe, have the faith and are willing to do the work.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Francine Weinberg

by Cyrus Webb

We've all heard the saying if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. For those who have dedicated themselves to making the world a better place this is our mission each and every day.

For Francine Weinberg this was something that was not just necessary but vital Because of the restrictions placed on passengers when it came to traveling with personal items she realized that there was a need for a produce that was not just convenient to use but safe as well. This led her to invent Airsafe Carryon.

Why was this something that was important for her to do? It was bigger than just something that looked good for travelers.  "I lost my brother at a young age to a rare bone cancer linked to chemical exposure," she explained. "In his memory, I was determined to make a difference. I traveled often and seeing the legions of fellow travelers using these horrible make-shift cheap containers to meet airline liquid carry-on restrictions, I was determined to focus on the safety aspect coupled with convenience for millions of air travelers."

This planted the seed for what would become Airsafe Carryon, the world's only hassle-free, leak-proof integrated liquid travel system that ends the nightmare of traveling with personal liquids. Airsafe Carryon's unique dishwasher safe, BPA-free liquid containers are also made from safer food-grade plastic, which is important for carrying skin and hair liquid products.

Though she is using the funding site Kickstarter to aid in production of Airsafe Carryon, Francine is also continue to use the platform she has created to continue her advocacy to the public of safety, travel convenience and style by inviting contributors to be a part of her "The Evolution of Travel" movement.

Conversations Magazine Feature: Mary Jo Copeland

"Driven by her faith and a fierce commitment to her community, Mary Jo Copeland has spent more than a quarter-century lifting up the under-served. Her unyielding vision for stronger neighborhoods has inspired people nationwide, and her compassion for the poor and marginalized speaks to the depth of the human spirit. The United States honors Mary Jo Copeland for sparking hope in those who need it most." ~ President Barack Obama

by Cyrus Webb

I didn't learn about Mary Jo Copeland and the amazing work she was doing through the organization Sharing and Caring Hands until I read Michelle Peterson Hinck's book about her called GREAT LOVE: The Mary Jo Copeland Story. Through that book I was able to better understand why President Obama said the words that he did about her and why she received the Presidential Citizens Medal for her efforts.

Though she had lived a busy life as a wife and mother to her large family, there was more for her to do in the world and Mary Jo set about doing it. Whether it was volunteering to assist others or just being that listening ear when it was needed, she was able to show us all what it meant to be a citizen of this world and a true member of the human family.

Through Sharing and Caring Hands she would gain the attention needed to mobilize others to action, and it all began with her example. She set out to make the lives of individuals better, and she took that objective as seriously as any other. As she says in the book there was always something to do, and it was her mission to make sure that no one ever felt unwanted or unloved.

During my interview with Ms. Copeland on Conversations LIVE she shared with me how the attention she has received has been great, not because of herself but the work she has committed her life to. It is her hope that she can show through her example what one person can do if they only try.
